The debates over teacher licensure are often oversimplified. The reality is much more complex, as the specific designs of licensure systems are likely to matter a great deal. If we want the conversation to be different and more productive moving forward, it is imperative that we study licensure carefully. In this brief, Goldhaber and Comb set the stage for future research and debate by outlining some of the key issues surrounding licensure debates and what we know (and don't know) based on empirical research.
